Chiisai

Open-source specification for efficient HAL development on resource-constrained microcontrollers

Chiisai aims to make the development of HALs, middleware and embedded software for small microcontrollers simpler, more consistent and interoperable. The publication of the Chiisai HAL Specification marks the starting point for the community-driven evolution of an open standard.

Software Reuse Across Platforms

The name Chiisai comes from Japanese and means “small.” The specification is designed specifically for resource-constrained microcontrollers used in sensors, actuators, and other compact embedded systems. It defines standardized interfaces for basic and communication functions and establishes a clear separation between microcontroller drivers and middleware. This creates a common foundation for software reuse across different hardware platforms.

Collaboration for Open Software

The specification was developed in collaboration with Infineon. Additional semiconductor manufacturers are already actively supporting the Chiisai standard and are working together to build an open, vendor-independent software ecosystem. As a result, Chiisai provides a common foundation for interoperable software components and a unified approach to developing Hardware Abstraction Layers (HALs), middleware and embedded software.

Key Benefits at a Glance

  • Open Standard
Develop drivers for small microcontrollers based on an open standard without restrictions to specific application domains.
  • Optimized for Small Microcontrollers
The Chiisai HAL Specification focuses on lightweight driver functionality with a small footprint, making it well suited for resource-constrained microcontrollers.
  • Simplified Software Reuse
Standardized interfaces between drivers and middleware simplify software reuse and ease migration across different hardware platforms.
  • Cross-Vendor Collaboration
The open standard establishes a common foundation for collaboration across vendors and is already actively supported by multiple semiconductor manufacturers.
  • Foundation for an Open Software Ecosystem
Clearly defined interfaces simplify the integration and evolution of HALs, middleware, and embedded software.
