Exciting Vacations Guaranteed: At the Vector Techcamp 2020

Since 2015, TechCamp has been a permanent and popular institution within Vector's diverse family offerings. It offers teenage employees' children exciting discoveries and fascinating opportunities in the areas of IT technology and programming during the vacations. The extraordinary thing about this year's TechCamp: it was the first time it was held virtually and across locations.

Against the background of the Corona Pandemic and the associated uncertainties, it is something very special: This year, the Vector TechCamp took place from August 3 to 14, 2020, for the sixth time in a row - and for the first time virtually and across locations. This gave the children of employees from all German locations the opportunity to get to know and make friends. The demand was even higher than in previous years. The maximum number of participants was extended to 60 and a second week was organized especially for this purpose. The fact that the TechCamp could even take place in 2020 in the middle of the Corona year was something that Vector's management was very keen on and was happy to bear the additional costs.

As a highly exciting project, Vector TechCamp inspires in the sense of a qualified, lively promotion of young people in engineering and computer science. In cooperation with the creative workshop Tinkertank from Ludwigsburg, teenagers are taught programming in a playful and vivid way. This year the microcontroller Arduino was used, which can be programmed with its own C or C++ like language. The Corona crisis made this even more challenging on both sides. Because instead of meeting face-to-face, the young coders and their mentors came together virtually for the first time.

The highlight of this year's TechCamp was certainly the topic "SmartHome - an upgrade for your room". Since they spent a lot of time in their room during the past weeks and months with homeschooling, this topic appealed to a particularly large number of teenagers. This resulted in highly individual objects such as arcade machines made of LED strips, unusual game controllers and input devices for the computer - but also so-called infinity mirrors, glowing hats, IoT alarm systems that warn via chatbot when someone enters the room, pricked weather stations and under floor lighting for loft beds. In advance, the participants received a comprehensive technical package and building materials by mail. Together with existing objects from their own rooms and lots of creativity, the teenagers were able to develop their smart objects. For vectorians with children the TechCamp is a fixed part of the annual planning. Most of them are so enthusiastic that they will be back in the following year and also build long-lasting friendships with the other children of the employees.

In order to provide its employees with the greatest possible flexibility and a good work-life balance, Vector supports the TechCamp with a variety of offers that are regularly and gladly taken advantage of. In addition to the Stuttgart location, families in Regensburg and Karlsruhe have also been able to take advantage of vacation care with theme weeks since this year. In addition, Vector also covers part of the vacation care costs for children and young people at all other German Vector locations.

Another example of Vector's family orientation: In the future, the childcare services will be expanded nationwide, so that there will also be daycare places for employees' children outside of Stuttgart. Since 2011, employees have been able to register their youngest children aged 6 months to 3 years at the Stuttgärtchen daycare center.
The overall aim is to offer reliable and competent care for the children. For all offers, Vector works together with long-standing partners. In addition, Vector attaches great importance to ensuring that the offerings are exciting and varied - because boredom, whether during the vacations or in between, is guaranteed not to occur at Vector.
