Solutions for Hybrid Electric Aviation
Development and Test of Safety-Critical Systems
In recent years hybrid electric aviation has developed into one of the most exciting technology drivers and innovation topics in aviation. Catalyzed by the increasing urbanization and population density of metropolitan regions as well as fast-paced developments in the field of electric drives, autonomous vehicle control, 5G communication networks and vehicle sharing services, new urban mobility concepts are emerging that incorporate the third dimension.
Both suitable technology concepts and thoroughly planning of the verification and certification procedures will be of strategic importance to be a successful market player and grow profitably.
Due to Vector's many years of experience and competence in the development and testing of safety-critical systems such as flight controls and pilot assistance systems, many hybrid electric innovation leaders are already using Vector’s test and development tools.
Vector provides aircraft manufacturers and suppliers with a professional and open development platform of tools for the development and test of embedded systems. Five fields of application are in particular focus:
- Software Testing: Automation of DO178C and DO330 compliant testing activities across the software development lifecycle of avionics systems
- Software Analytics: Monitoring of every type of software and systems development project
- System Testing: Realize development accompanying SIL simulations and HIL tests with parallel access to bus systems (e.g. CAN/ARINC 825, ARINC 429, Ethernet) and I/Os
- Smart Charging: Support developers of charging stations and induction charging systems according to ISO 15118, SAE J2847/2 with extensive test systems
- System Engineering: Support the development of avionic system architectures according to DO 178C and DO254 and their optimization for more efficient systems
The software in avionics systems are bounded by strong regulatory standards. With failure regarded as “not an option”, significant analysis and effort is put into the verification and validation of these systems. In fact, industry wide, in a typical DO-178C Level A project fifty percent of the development budget is used for structural testing the software. The ability to automate and simulate these systems can greatly assist in reducing the overall effort, and hence the implementation costs.
The VectorCAST family of tools supports the creation and management of test cases to prove that the low-level software requirements of airborne systems have been tested. Additionally, the VectorCAST tools support the capture and reporting of structural code coverage data at all design assurance levels (DAL A, B, C, D and E) prescribed by DO-178C and ED-12C.
For 30 years, the share of embedded electronics has been growing in the aviation industry, for the benefit of passenger safety, functionalities reliability, performance and comfort. A trend that will accelerate in the coming years, to see the wide-scale development of ever more electric, automated and interconnected urban air taxis. For each of these development axes, software has become a major and transversal component, and is now indispensable to prevent accidents and malfunction risks. To control and mitigate these risks, development teams need real-time access to the most relevant indicators to optimize their software project management.

Comprehensive and structured testing of networked aircraft and cabin systems is necessary not just for economic reasons, but also in terms of meeting strict the regulations of e.g. DO178, DO330, DO254. The VT System and CANoe tools from Vector offers a test system that can be scaled from simple test equipment at the developer’s workstation to a highly automated hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environment. The core idea of the VT System is to combine all the hardware functions required for LRU testing in a modular system seamlessly integrated into CANoe. The test hardware covers the inputs and outputs, including the power supply and network connections of a control unit or subsystem. At each pin, changing the function according to stimulation, measurement, load simulation, fault connection and switching between simulation and original sensors and actuators is possible.
Innovative solutions are becoming more available to allow electric air mobility to enter the mass-market. An important part of this is the charging technology. The term smart charging is used for charging systems of electric or hybrid vehicles according to ISO 15118, DIN SPEC 70121, SAE J2847/2. Vector supports developers of charging stations with extensive solutions for communication controllers and charging station management systems.
The development of avionic systems is strongly regulated, processes must comply with regulatory requirements from standards as DO178C or ARP4754. A profound documentation of the requirements and the respective system/software architecture as well as their relations are important preconditions for successful regulatory audits.
