The Next Evolution of CAN: CAN XL

Special Interest Group pushes for new CAN protocol

After the first meeting, the CAN XL Special Interest Group (SIG) organized by CAN in Automation at the end of December 2018, a second meeting took place beginning of February 2019.  The objective of the SIG participants, led by Bosch, is to extend the CAN protocol for applications such as the connection of radar sensors, eCall devices and microphones. For this CAN XL is to provide a data rate of 10 MBit/s and support a maximum payload of 2,048 bytes. This would also allow tunneling TCP/IP packets over CAN XL.

The interest of automotive manufacturers, suppliers and semiconductor manufacturers is great. More than 40 participants from 20 companies attended the meetings. Additional task teams were formed for topics such as the physical connection of CAN XL and the definition of higher protocol layers.

Vector, as a CAN know-how carrier, is involved in the Special Interest Group. The next SIG meeting will take place at Vector Stuttgart (Germany) on April 30, 2019.
