    Company History

    The company Vector Software GmbH was founded on April 1st, 1988 by Eberhard Hinderer, Martin Litschel, and Dr. Helmut Schelling. Based on this engineering company, an international, continuously growing enterprise has emerged. From the beginning, the typical Vector values of innovative power, fairness, honesty, and loyalty were in the focus - among the employees as well as towards customers. These traditional values, combined with a visionary view, were and are the foundation for our successful growth.

    Company

    Vector is expanding its management team as of Jan. 1, 2021. Dr. Stefan Krauß, who has been with the company for 19 years, is joining the management team as its third member. Vector thus takes into account the challenges of continuous company growth.

    COVID-19 also poses great challenges to the global economy in 2021 and hence also to Vector. Our employees worldwide cope comparatively well with home offices and decentralized collaboration. Vector is also actively confronting the virus with vaccination campaigns for the workforce, and digital social events are bringing the teams a little closer together again. Furthermore, many online events are replacing face-to-face events.

    The supply chains for raw materials and semiconductors, which collapsed at the beginning of the pandemic, continue to cause Vector as much trouble as they do for our customers.

    On the Vector Campus in Weilimdorf, Stuttgart, a leased office building at Weissacherstrasse 9 is completed in line with Vector's architectural guidelines. Starting in December, 1,100 employees of the Embedded Systems department will move into high-quality workplaces here. This means that there is space for approximately 3,000 employees on the campus.

    The Vector development site in Regensburg is also being expanded: In November, a second construction phase for 155 employees and a new company restaurant will be completed. In addition, construction is underway on the next building with a total of 230 workplaces. In total, almost 600 employees at the Regensburg site will thus contribute to Vector's success.

    In general, trends such as "Car Software" and "Vehicle Operating Systems" determine E/E development in the automobile.     Vector continues to focus on developing software and hardware solutions that simplify the development, testing and analysis of embedded systems. New and further developments are being made primarily in the area of automated test sequences from model tests to system validation.

    CANoe4SW is being optimized as a versatile tool for developing, testing and analyzing software in cyber-physical systems. Solutions for CANoe under the motto "Beyond Automotive", such as the "Connectivity Hub", are being developed. 

    In addition, Vector is increasingly working on intelligent solutions for the important topics of electromobility, cybersecurity, connectivity and autonomous driving (ADAS). For use in ADAS projects, Vector is launching the CANoe ADAS Feature Set for stimulation, testing and analysis of ADAS algorithms, as well as high-performance platforms for complex smart-logger applications.

    The Corona pandemic has posed great challenges for Vector. To protect employees and contribute to limiting the further spread of the virus, most of our employees have been working from their home offices since mid-March. Because there were no trade shows, congresses or other gatherings, Vector organized two big online events: the Vector Virtual Weeks were held in April and November and were well-received and well-rated by approximately 6,500 participants.

    The Corona restrictions and general economic uncertainty hardly slowed personnel growth. Vector welcomed 200 new colleagues around the world, who are helping to reduce the complexity of developing embedded systems for our customers.

    Engineers in the automobile sector focused on technology trends such as autonomous driving, electrification of the drive train and the associated charge management, and continuous integration in all development phases. Another trend is the simultaneous integration of microcontroller- and microprocessor-controlled E/E systems and architectures into vehicles.

    Generally, the safety and quality of embedded software in cyber-physical systems is playing an ever more important role, regardless of whether for vehicles, airplanes, medical technology devices or Industry 4.0. This is also changing software developers’ role.

    Vector continues to work at full speed to develop tools, software, hardware, and sophisticated solutions that make developing embedded systems easier and thus put engineers on the fast track.  Here, CANoe4SW is a versatile software tool that plays a crucial role in developing, testing, and analyzing software in cyber-physical systems - not just in the automobile sector, but across industries. For the first time, Vector is expanding its offerings to include a distribution agreement: Vector is marketing its tool suite for statistical code analysis to the Swabian company Axivion in the USA and China in order to complement its range of software tools.

    High-performance measurement technology solutions and charging and charge management software in the e-mobility sector will be put on the market. Intelligent smart logging solutions for ADAS projects will round out Vector's already comprehensive ADAS portfolio.

    Products for testing virtual AUTOSAR ECUs and testing driver assistance systems on virtual test drives will help software integrators and test engineers across the whole development process.

    With the outbreak of the Corona pandemic, Vector has converted all of its trainings into remote trainings. Many short and basic trainings are being offered free of charge in order to assist our customers. The new Vector training center for more than 200 participants, which features innovative architecture, opened in October without being able to start normal operations.

Adaptive MICROSAR, a basic software package for the AUTOSAR Adaptive Platform, is an extension of Vector’s proven MICROSAR solution. In the area of cyber security Vector provides embedded software, services and tools for protecting embedded systems against cyber attacks.

    Vector Software Inc., Rhode Island, USA, and Timing-Architects, Regensburg, Germany, have become part of the Vector Group. Vector Software’s main product, VectorCast, is for automated testing of embedded software. Timing-Architects specializes in the evaluation and optimization of embedded multi-core and many-core real-time systems. In Regensburg the occupants of the first Vector building are moving in, and on the Vector Campus in Stuttgart a new extension will be built. The year ended very successfully for Vector with the hiring of its 2,000th employee and the record sales revenue of more than 520 million €.

    Two new subsidiaries were established in Italy and Brasil. Construction of the company's fifth building is beginning at Vector headquarters in Stuttgart. The three founders E. Hinderer, M.     Vector moves from Ditzingen to the Stuttgart district of Weilimdorf. Office space doubles to more than 1300 sqm. Vector starts to offer training courses on CAN tools and fundamentals for developers. Product distribution is now handled by DG in the USA and NPS in Japan.

    Embedded software from Vector can be tool configured. Vector offers the first PCMCIA interface for CAN which is known as the CANcard. This makes the laptop an ideal tool for test engineers - which still holds true today.

    CiA organizes the first international CAN Conference (iCC) in Mainz. In the same year, Allen-Bradley introduces the DeviceNet protocol, which competes with the CANopen protocol primarily in Asia and the USA.

    CAN gains in international importance. Vector becomes active in France via the distributor NSI, and in the UK via AccuTest.

    Product developments are accelerated. CANalyzer can already handle symbolic display and speaks CAL and DeviceNet. Daimler procures the first basic software for its ECUs from Vector. In December 1994, a new product is ready: the first CANoe version is released - under Windows 3.11. CANoe stands for CAN Open Environment. A canoe now serves as a product icon.

    ISO 11898 internationally standardizes and defines Layers 1 (physical layer) and 2 (data protection layer) for the CAN bus in the ISO/OSI reference model.

    International marketing of CANalyzer begins through Thau Computer in Switzerland and through Softing and its foreign distributors.

    In this year, there are three DOS CANalyzer releases: CANalyzer V1.20 released in February adds savable configurations and ideal readability of the Trace window. CANalyzer V1.30 in March makes it possible to use the Philips 82C200 to not only receive preconfigured messages, but all CAN messages. CANalyzer V2.00 appears in July and supports 29-bit IDs (Extended CAN 82527) for the first time.

    The first version of CANalyzer is ready. It is based on DOS and Vector's GBS graphic user interface system. The first 30 CANalyzer products are sold to the companies Haushahn, Daimler-Benz, Siemens and Bosch. The DBB-196 CAN interface hardware from Daimler-Benz or CAN-AC from Softing is used for bus access.

    On March 5, 1992 six companies and two private individuals found the "CAN in Automation" association - an international users and manufacturers association for the CAN serial bus system. Vector joins right after it is founded. CiA publishes the CAL protocol, which is a predecessor of the CANopen specification.

    Vector Software GmbH becomes Vector Informatik GmbH, the logo is updated and the color red replaces the previous orange. Vector launches its first projects to develop basic software for ECUs. In the company's fourth business year, sales revenue grows to over one million €.

    On October 30, 1991 the Vector founders present the CANalyzer concept to an internal Daimler "Bus working group." The idea: to create a software program that could be used to observe communication on the CAN bus and supplement it. The original concept also already included provisions for generating errors.

    Philips offers another CAN controller as the PCA82C200. Although it loads the CPU more, it is very flexible in its use. The 500E from Daimler-Benz is the world's first production vehicle with CAN-networked engine/powertrain management. In December 1990, Daimler-Benz introduces CAN-C for the powertrain and CAN-B for climate control components in the S-Class.

    On April 1, Martin Litschel, Dr. Helmut Schelling and Eberhard Hinderer founded the company "Vector Software GmbH" in Ditzingen near the city limits of the automotive city of Stuttgart. The initial business goal of Vector: Software solutions for NC-controlled machine tools. The company name refers to the complicated vector calculations needed for this software. The first employee joins the company in October. Today he is still working at Vector.
