USB Router for Testing Smart Devices

For so-called smart devices a wide variety of wireless interfaces and protocols exist. These devices are being used in many areas, such as the automotive industry, medical technology and IoT applications. Testing these devices can be a challenge.

The VH4110 hardware - also called ‘IoT Enabler’ - connects your wireless smart devices under test locally, without an internet connection, to the CANoe development and test tool. The small, handy USB hardware is based on a commercially available Raspberry Pi 4B. In a typical test setup, the VH4110 hardware can serve as a router for IP-based communication between the CANoe host and the devices under test, which are connected to a local network via a (wireless) LAN, for example. In addition, devices with non-IP-based radio protocols can also be connected locally, such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or ZigBee.

Since the networking of the VH4110 hardware is only available to CANoe, the user does not need special network privileges or additional firewall filters. If a wireless protocol is not yet implemented in the device software supplied by Vector, users can add their own modifications to add proprietary network interfaces and devices.

Test of smart devices via their wireless interfaces

  • Simply connect the VH4110 hardware to your Device Under Test (DUT) via a local connection only

  • Supported protocols: LAN/WLAN, ZigBee, BLE, and more

  • Many other protocols can be implemented. Connections for SPI, I2C, UART, and others also exist.

Test of devices with new as well as proprietary protocols

  • Extend the VH4110 hardware with new protocols that are not yet officially available
  • Implement your own protocols

Test of prototype hardware

  • Implement your own device drivers if required
  • The product design allows testing on different abstraction levels e.g., functional testing on application


The VH4110 IoT Enabler is designed to be very open and modifiable. The operating system is based on Linux and thus allows flexible adaptation to your needs. The control software for communication with CANoe is written in Python and is therefore easy to modify. Programs can also be implemented in other languages.

Example of a typical setup with the VH4110 hardware: Access point/router and the device to be tested are part of the user’s setup. Wireless devices that enable communication with the router or via radio protocols, such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), are connected to the USB ports of the VH4110 hardware by the user.
