CANoe for E-Mobility – Analyzing, Simulating and Testing of Charging Communications

CANoe Option SmartCharging extends CANoe by adding the possibility of simulating the communication behavior of an electric vehicle (EV) or charging station (EVSE) during the charging process. This makes option SmartCharging the ideal tool for setting up a flexible, parameterizable counterpart for validating functionality in developing charging controllers for EVs and EVSEs. In addition to the automatic communication sequence, the individual sending and receiving of predefined communication messages is also possible. This functionality lets you implement test cases easily and conveniently.


Seamless integration into CANoe means that any other desired functions can be added to the test setup such as:

  • Integration of sources and sinks for testing complete systems
  • Adding other network systems for time-synchronous tracking of the communications of other components such as the charging controller, on-board charger (OBC) or battery management system (BMS)


  • The System under Test (SUT) does not require a real communication partner
  • Convenient adaptation of even various simulation parameters
  • Flexibility in creating test cases with manual or automatic triggering of communication sequences
  • Wide range of applications based on full support of DIN 70121, ISO/IEC 15118 and GB/T 27930 protocols
  • Easy management of security certificates and support of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for Transport Layer Security (TLS) via Security Manager

Application Areas

Analyzing, simulating and testing communication between an electric vehicle and a charging station based on the international standards IEC 61851, DIN 70121, ISO 15118, GB/T 27930 and CHAdeMO (product function under development).


  • Simulating the charging process of an electric vehicle or charging station on the communications level:
    • Configuration of all key parameters in a XML file (DIN 70121/ISO 15118)

  • Analyzing communications between an electric vehicle and a charging station during the charging process:
    • Interpreting of messages in the Trace window
    • Offline analyzing of logged communications

  • Support of Signal Level Attenuation Characterization (SLAC) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) protocols for the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard
  • Monitoring and logging of important message contents:
    • Provisioning of selected contents in system variables (DIN 70121/ISO 15118)


Supported Standards

  • IEC 61851
    The international standard IEC61851 describes, among other things, the hardware-based basic communication via PWM signal on the Control Pilot (CP) line in the charging cable. This basic communication is a prerequisite for communications which make use of the higher-level protocols DIN 70121 and ISO/IEC 15118.
  • ISO/IEC 15118
    The international standard ISO/IEC 15118 defines communications between an electric vehicle (EV) and a charging station (EVSE). It enables charging with AC and DC voltages. The charging process can be started at the charging station by external identification means (EIM) or by automatic identification using a TLS-encrypted plug-and-charge (PnC) connection. ISO/IEC 15118 is part of the Combined Charging System (CCS). It not only defines communication protocols, but also other components such as plug connectors. It is used primarily in Europe and in the USA.
  • DIN 70121
    The German standard DIN 70121 is also part of the Combined Charging System (CCS), but it only describes charging with DC voltage by external identification means (EIM).
  • GB/T 27930
    The Chinese standard GB/T 27930 describes charging between a charging station (EVSE) and an electric vehicle (EV) using DC voltage.
  • CHAdeMO
    The Japanese standard CHAdeMO describes charging between a charging station (EVSE) and an electric vehicle (EV) using DC voltage.


  • The CANoe option SmartCharging exclusively handles the communication of the higher communication layers, such as the application layer.
  • For lower communication layers such as the transport layer, an additional CANoe option is needed for the specific standard that is used.
    • For the DIN 70121 and ISO 15118 standards of the Combined Charging System (CCS) option Ethernet is needed.
    • GB/T 27930 standard requires option J1939.
    • CHAdeMO standard requires option CAN which is already part of CANoe.

  • For the DIN 70121 and ISO 15118 standards of the Combined Charging System (CCS), which are based on Power Line Communication (PLC), one of these VT System hardware modules is needed:  VT7970 (Qualcomm) or VT7971 (Vertexcom) – or VT7870 which is still supported. 
  • The GB/T 27930 and CHAdeMO standards are based on CAN communication. Therefore a broad range of Vector interface hardware is offered, such as the hardware of the VN1600 Interface Family and the VT6104A module of the VT System.
